Organic Fertilizers We Use
Each Fall we plant large sections of the farm down in red clover. The clover has the ability to remove nitrogen from the air and put it in the soil during the winter. In the early spring, we plow the clover under (green manure) right before it is in full bloom stage. On certain spots we also move the chickens over the soil to drop manure on sections that we use to grow vegetables like tomatoes, eggplant, peppers and other heavy feeders. We also use fish emulsion for most of our greens, squashes, and pumpkins.
How we got Started
We started raising organic vegetables in our backyard to have fresh local produce available for our family. The nearest store was 70 miles away. Our children had several food allergies and organic was the only food source that would work. Our neighbors asked to buy our produce because it looked so good. We started taking our extra produce to the Pee Dee State Farmer's Market on Saturdays and selling it. We got our first booth 3 years ago and when they were building a new building to be open year round, we also rented an indoor booth that we could sell seasonal organic vegetables, eggs, milk, etc(see our product offerings) year round. We became charter members of the Certified South Carolina Grown program and will be applying for our USDA Organic Certification on over 40 different vegetables and fruits soon.
